York Mystery Soul Festival at York Theatre Royal

York Theatre Royal and J-Night announce six summer nights of the hottest jazz, gospel and soul music to celebrate the York Mystery Plays 2012 in August.


August 10: Ruby Turner is a national treasure, best known as lead vocalist in Jools Hollands R&B orchestra, performing with her own band opens the Festival with a gospel based set.

August 11: Snake Davis is well established as one of the UK's leading Saxophonists, playing with Lisa Stansfield, M-People and the Eurythmics, brings his 9-piece Northern Soul big band to the city. Snake was co-founder of the York supergroup Zoot and the Roots in the 1970s.

August 17: York guitarist Al Morrison leads an 11-piece blues revue  celebrating the great blues artists such as BB King, Robert Johnson, T Bone Walker, Ray Charles and Eric Clapton. The featured vocalist is Juliet Roberts, who is well-known for her work with Working Week, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Courtney Pine and many more.

August 18: Jazz Jamaica combine reggae, jazz and ska to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jamaican independence with Tighten Up - a show that explores the legacy of Trojan Records and the sounds of motherland Jamaica. Expect classics such as Harry J All Stars “Liquidator”, the Skatalites “Guns of Navarone” and Prince Buster’s “Al Capone”. Myrna Hague is known as Jamaica’s first lady of jazz, acknowledged for inventing “Lover’s Rock”.

August 24: Pee Wee Ellis is the man who invented funk, writing 26 hits for James Brown and then becoming musical director for Esther Phillips George Benson and Van Morrison for 12 years.

August 25: The South African Gospel Singers are the original African super choir, formed in 1979 to fight apartheid. They draw on Xhosa, Zulu and Suthu vocal traditions while embracing township and traditional harmonies, gospel, jazz and soul to create the very best South African music.

The festival takes place every Friday and Saturday night throughout the Mystery Plays at York Theatre Royal, and will include foyer performances from bands and djs and a festival bar open until midnight.
