The Modern Mysteries & The Forest of Galtres Festival

About Galtres Festival…

Who needs Glastonbury when York's got Galtres?

Now eight years old, Galtres Festival is one of the best family festivals in the country. Combining seven stages of music, theatre and cabaret, more than 150 fine beers and ciders all from Yorkshire (from Black Sheep Ale to Ampleforth Abbey Cider), excellent local produce catering (from Whitby Scampi to Yorkshire Puds), loads for kids to do from film making to music workshops, and all set in a beautiful rural setting overlooking the Vale of York.

Music ranges from chart-topping bands to local emerging talent, ranging from pop and acoustic to jazz, blues and folk. Headliners for 2012 include Billy Bragg, Adam Ant, Ocean Colour Scene, Ash, Seth Lakeman and the Guillemots. There’s comedy, theatre and offbeat performances at the night cabaret, films, family camping and clean loos too!

One of the best weekends of the year, and one of the best-priced too with adult weekend tickets just £60* (limited discount offer, see below). It's organic, fair trade and green, and all proceeds go to charity. Don't miss it!

Our involvement…

Since The Modern Mysteries ‘Writer’s Development Programme’ began in February 2012: The Forest of Galtres Festival has at the forefront of all our minds as a performance destination.

The prospect of showcasing new writing in an environment, specifically designed to encourage and develop the arts is extremely exciting – for the writers and actors alike.

"We're all really thrilled about the Modern Mysteries coming to Galtres," said Festival Director James Houston. "Galtres Festival draws heavily on the extraordinary creative talent in York and around, and each year showcases the most innovative and exciting music, theatre, and cabaret. We've worked hard to develop the quality of drama and storytelling at Galtres in recent years, and this collaboration with Script Yorkshire and the Mystery Plays will help us deliver an even better quality programme to our audience."

"Alongside the major  re-staging of the York Mystery Plays at the Museum Gardens in August we were keen to find out some modern interpretations of the stories from emerging and established writers,” added Liam Evans-Ford, Community Producer for the York Mystery Plays 2012. “This partnership with Galtres Festival, a festival very much at the heart of its community, allows our script writers a unique opportunity to see their plays performed in a Festival setting."

The Modern Mysteries are scheduled to perform every day over the three day festival from the 24th- 26th August.  As is our style: we shall be exploring various formats and locations around the Galtres site – bringing interactive and accessible theatre to audiences at the Festival.

Start time - 7.15pm (running time 1hr30 minutes approx)

Performed for the first time as a full cycle, audiences are invited to join a host of masquerading angels on a thought provoking journey: encountering The Modern Mysteries in their truest form.

The York Mystery Plays 2012 and Script Yorkshire York Branch created an initiative to support local writers, as they develop original scripts based on modern interpretations from the Mystery Plays Cycle.

Following a four month writer’s development programme, the six chosen scripts have been put into production. York based Theatre Companies are collaborating to bring the six short plays to the Galtres Festival.

Transported in to a haven hosted by masquerading angels: journey with them and encounter ‘Modern Mysteries’ along the way.
