The Educational Resource pack is sponsored by York St John University and has been drawn up by the education departments from York Theatre Royal, Riding Lights Theatre Company and York Museums Trust. The pack will be sent to all local schools early in 2012 and offers lesson plans on the religious and historical background to the plays, with a strong focus on the theatrical elements of the plays and the art and design around staging a production.
The Mystery Plays have always had great national and international support and we have made this pack available on our website so that schools based further afield can download the pack. Local schools that are including the pack in their scheme of work for 2012 can access further copies.
The York Mystery Plays have always been part of the fabric of the City of York, and the plays themselves give an insight into the people of Yorkshire who have told these stories for over 800 years. We are hoping that all local schools will play their part by using the resources in the pack to enthuse and excite pupils about this local tradition which has achieved such an international standing.
Within the pack is a new adaptation of Procula’s Dream, one of the original plays in the Mystery Cycle, which will be suitable for primary and secondary school children to perform. We hope that local schools will get in touch with the Mystery Plays team; either for us to document their staging of the plays, or take up our offer of a free workshop. However you involve the Mystery Plays in your teaching during 2012, let us know, we’d love to hear from you.
2012 is a special year for the country, the region and for the City of York, and the York Mystery Cycle is a rich source for educational inspiration.
