Following the phenomenal success of last year’s York Mystery Plays, a group of local supporters has been formed to help promote future productions of the iconic plays and build awareness of them throughout the city and beyond.
The York Mystery Plays Supporters Trust (YMPST), which will mark its official launch at a special event on Monday 11th March at the De Grey Rooms, sets out to support the York Mystery Plays in their various incarnations whether on the back of waggons touring the streets or in a fixed-stage production such as the one that dazzled audiences in the York Museum Gardens last year.
Whilst the Trust will not stage the Mystery Plays themselves, they aim to support those that do through fund-raising and public awareness initiatives; they are committed to ensuring that a large scale, fixed stage production is carried out on a regular basis.
YMPST Chair Alex Hughes commented: “With the wonderful goodwill and interest generated by last year’s production it was important that a new group was formed to keep the momentum going. The Mystery Plays are an important part of the city’s heritage and also its future. The Trust will be there to keep spreading the word, raising funds and helping to keep this tradition alive for future generations.”
The launch will be attended by the York Mystery Plays Supporters Trust committee, many of whom were involved in the 2012 production, as well as leading figures associated with York Mystery Plays and the City of York.
Following its launch, the York Mystery Plays Supporters Trust is hoping that more like minded individuals, who are committed to the future of the plays, will join the group’s membership. As well as supporting the Mystery Plays, members will also receive a number of benefits and special offers.
