York Dragon Boat Challenge
Fri 15 Jun 2012
A team representing the York Mystery Plays 2012 will be taking to the water to tackle York Rotary's Dragon Boat Challenge on Sunday 8th July.
Celebrating its tenth staging, the Dragon Boat Challenge pits up to 36 teams against each other on the River Ouse between Scarborough and Lendal Bridges. With 16 paddlers and 1 drummer on each boat, mayhem can often ensue - though professional helmsmen are provided to avoid complete disaster!
To distinguish the teams from one another they are asked to adopt a team outfit. As this year sees the city of York celebrate 800 years as a self-governing city, entrants will be costumed to reflect the City's history; a history that the York Cycle of Mystery Plays is a proud part of.
The York Mystery Plays 2012 team will pool the immense sporting talents of Mystery Plays staff and volunteers, the York Theatre Royal, the York Museums Trust and Riding Lights Theatre Company. A sure-fire winning combination!
The challenge is in aid of charity with all teams raising money for the Brunswick Organic Nursery and Craft Workshop and York Blind and Partially Sighted Society. In addition each boat will be supporting their own nominated charity - in the case of the Mystery Plays team it is the York Citizens' Theatre Trust.
So please support the Mystery Plays team by giving them a cheer from the banks of the Ouse and also by donating using the link below.
The Mystery Plays team are scheduled to take part in Race 6 (11.15am), Race 17 (1.40pm) & Race 25 (3.10pm) - and hopefully the final at 4pm.
